This project saw us change the use of the property from a commercial restaurant and guest house to a residential dwelling. The cottage required extensive demolition with a sensitivity to the original features of this iconic Alpine Way treasure. It was of great importance for the owners and architects to retain the history and memories within the building, maintaining some of the key features such as the stone fireplace and open mezzanine level and large timber sections within the roof frame. This part of the build included a new kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms situated upstairs.
To fully repurpose the building an extension was necessary. The architects felt it was important that the additional building did not try to replicate the original design. Then therefore there was a modern approach required for the extension.
Some unique features with this build was an in-floor hydronic heating system over existing slab. Along with some clever use of insulation products to thermally improve this old besa block building.
